The harm of indoor
decoration pollution

室內裝修污染的危害

  • A common person breathes air about of 300,000 cubic meters or 380 tons in 75 years of life.*1
  • A person stays indoors for more than 20 hours a day, and the elderly and children spend more time indoors.
  • According to the World Health Organization, indoor air pollution causes 4.3 million deaths worldwide each year.*2
  • According to the Environmental Monitoring Center of the China Interior Decoration Association, indoor air pollution causes as many as 111,000 deaths nationwide each year.*2
  • Relevant statistics from the national indoor air detection departments show that harmful gases are seriously out of limits in more than 90% of newly decorated houses, mainly formaldehyde among others. The proportion of habitable rooms where formaldehyde exceeds the standard limits is more than 79% according to the random inspections conducted in Beijing, Shanghai and Tianjin.*2
  • According to the Beijing Chemical Toxicity Identification Center, up to 100,000 people are poisoned by toxic decorative materials in Beijing every year.*2
  • *1Assuming that a common person breathes 7.5 L of air per minute on average and the air density is 1.29 kg/m3, the average air volume respired by a common person in 75 years is 7.5×60×24×365×75/(103×104) = 295,565 m3, with an air mass of 381.4 tons.

Interior decoration pollution cannot be ignored!

Interior decoration pollutants mainly include formaldehyde, benzene, ammonia and TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds). After their emission amount exceeds the limit, the imbalance of immune system may be caused, affecting the central nervous system and digestive system, even damaging the liver and hematopoietic system in severe cases, and leading to allergic reactions and etc.

  • Interior decoration materials are one of the important sources of VOC in the air
  • Commonly-seen VOCs include formaldehyde, benzene homologs and derivates, and other carcinogens
  • VOCs can trigger a series of reactions by harming life and health
Hazards of Formaldehyde:

  • Irritation: Formaldehyde irritates skin mucous membrane, and may seriously irritate respiratory tract and cause edema, eye irritation, and headache when a high concentration of formaldehyde is inhaled.
  • Carcinogen: High concentrations of formaldehyde are also a genotoxic substance. Nasopharyngeal tumors may be induced in animals after inhalation of a high concentration of formaldehyde in laboratories.
  • Sensitization: Direct contact with formaldehyde may cause allergic dermatitis, spots and necrosis, and inhalation of a high concentration of formaldehyde may induce bronchial asthma.
Hazards of Benzene:

Inhalation of a large amount of benzene in a short period of time may cause poisoning, mainly including subacute poisoning, headache, dizziness, lacking in strength, and insomnia. After prolonged inhalation of benzene, there is a rapid decrease in platelets, or leukemia or direct death in severe cases.

Harm of Ammonia:

After inhalation of a large amount of ammonia gas in a short period of time, a person may appear tears, pharyngeal pain, hoarseness, cough, sputum with blood, chest tightness, dyspnea, and be accompanied by dizziness, headache, nausea, vomiting, and lacking in strength. In severe cases, inhalation of ammonia gas may lead to lung cancer mutations and lung tumors.

Hazards of TVOCs:

Inhalation of TVOCs usually affects the function of the central nervous system, and its main hazards include dizziness, headache, lethargy, weakness, chest tightness and other symptoms. In severe cases, inhalation of TVOCs may damage the liver and hematopoietic system, liver cancer and even death.
